Artist's Comments

This is my 3 and a half hour 'speed' paint. It's an idea for a possible homestead for where Tysho and Verkine grew up... until it gets levelled in the Seraphim invasion...

Storyline babble out the way, it was done in Photoshop with no reference... I very rarely draw landscapes and I'm still umming and ah0ing over this one, but what the hell.

Attack!

The image has a nice sense of depth, but the contrasts between the individual elements are too 'soft' (IMHO!), almost making it an aquarel. It lacks sharp detail.
(btw: the windmill is a great idea)

One vadditional comment: The 'soft feel especially becomes apparent with the bridge, crossing the river. The viewer's attention centers on it, though it's one of the most 'blurry elements in the image.

Cheers for the input, I guess I tried to make it look a little too serene for it's own good. So more contrast in the foreground, sharper details on some of the rocks, town and bridge? Do you think the colours work?

It's all good stuff man, I'm not great at landscapes so any comments are welcome.

nice use of colors and shadowing to add a realistic 3D feel...a good sence of depth :)

IMO the composition is good mate, as well as the range of colours.

that Marrekie fellow is right boy; even landscape needs a focal point, I think all the marks and the focus are a little too similar; what I mean is rock is hard water and sky tend to be soft, don't rely on just colour to do the job of saying which is which. Try to approach it the same way you would one of your character designs... you wouldn't paint cloth in the same way as metal. But I have to say it is very good for the time you did it in boy... if only I could work that fast! and a nice concept I think it will be excellent when you've developed it further.
:icontysho:
Ah. there you are! How are ya boy? Thanks for the advice, if anyone knows about landscape paintings- it's you.

I'm having a bit of a problem getting to sleep- I've got an interview in about 6 hours at Leicester university and haven't slept a wink. Stupid body.

whoa sorry for the late reply on this boy, how did the interview go? would have replied... but I've been busy what with my horrendous 12hour working days and all... work still maintain they pay well; i've pointed out that "long" hours of "low" pay to get a good amount of money is still low pay, just long hours... but that fell on deaf ears... bloody managers....
:iconmesmith:
Just a thought, maybe you should invest and get corel painter, you can easily swap between corel painter and photoshop as you work painter supports the .psd format. Painter might aid you in varying the marks a bit; painters most powerfull feature is its brush settings... you can create almost any kind of brush you could ever want or need.
